I was doing some preparatory work for some personal design I was doing for my business when I created these images. I was using the negative spaces as a positive in the work I was doing, whereas here I like the missing elements.

That’s it, nothing more to it than that than to let the pictures show you what I mean.

If I was going to go down the design route I might have made the white areas drip like paint from the bottom but I quite like them as they are.

I collect slides, film negative strips, and old photos found on sidewalks, in trash cans and at thrift shops, second hand stores, and online auctions. These pages contain thousands of images of amateur photos taken by ordinary Americans from the 1940s through the 1970s, and include snapshots taken on Kodachrome, Ektachrome, Anscochrome, and many other formats.

This is exactly what I’m looking for Dearest Forever but UKcentric. Haven’t a thing yet.

Boxes & keys

Since I was at college I’ve been secretly obsessed with boxes and keys. Boxes with locks or hidden doors in items of furniture. I’m not sure why. I do remember being upset when I went back to my art school to see some friend’s artwork and discovered that the emergency fire key in the glass covered box had been removed. Maybe that was the beginning of it all.

Anyway, regardless of why I have a fascination for them, here’s a man trapped in a box that I saw when I was at the National Portrait Museum recently who reminds me very much of the creepy little sailor I captured in Minehead last year. I must get some more pictures of him next time I’m there.

Collaborative Art

I’ve got an idea for an offline based on-going art piece about interpersonal connections in non digital media.
I don’t know if it’s feasible or if it’ll pan out at all but it’s a fairly quick set-up but the pay off won’t happen for a few years if at all.

I really need to get the bones of it down on paper before I forget it and then set up the online portion of it that will underpin the rest.

In the meantime, here’s a sketch I made of The Bride by Raphael Monti from Cheltenham Museum’s art collection.

The race

In my head I can see a tiny Scalextric track, a short circular loop, with two cars racing on it, I haven’t thought about that yet.
There’s a single crossover section on it and the cars are given ever so slightly varying power supplies but are kept roughly the same speed.

There is no finish line.

The track is revolving at a constant rate so that the cars are traveling at a roughly static rate to the viewer.
I can also see a much larger set up with a convoluted track covered in twists, crossovers and turns on a large turntable of some sort but rather than just spin at a set speed it speeds up, slows down, stops, goes backwards, all to keep the cars at one point of view.

Perhaps they are observed through a narrow slot so they appear to be dancing on the spot, to and fro, in front of the viewer.

I have no idea if there’s any deeper meaning to it than the fact I think it would be look cool. Maybe it’s that I’ve always fancied a Scalextric.
